He has Norwegian ancestry and was born on January 20, 1966. From 3 to 6 years of age, he lived in Nicaragua with his parents. Later they got divorced.

After graduating from there, he enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle. From there he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in drama in 1986.
