Richard Commey fought for the first bout in his career for a world championship on September 9, 2016, against undefeated Robert Easter Jr.

Commey down Easter Jr. in the eighth round, but it wasn’t enough for the judges, who scored the fight 115-112 and 114-113 in favor of Easter Jr., respectively, while the third judge scored the fight 114-113 for Commey, giving Easter Jr. the split-decision victory.

Richard Commey won the vacant IBF lightweight championship in 2016 and defeated Isa Chaniev in 2019 to win the belt for the second time. He made his first title defense against former champion Ray Beltrán in his following fight. Beltran’s belt was on the line since he failed to meet the fight’s weight restriction.

During the battle, Richard Commey fought and down Beltrán four times, the fourth knockdown being pivotal since it caused referee Eddie Hernandez Sr to halt the fight. On December 14, 2019, he faced off against unbeaten 22-year-old prospect Teófimo López.

Both combatants attempted to connect on a right hand in the middle of the second round, but López was the one who got to his target first, hitting Commey with a devastating right hand that knocked him down on the floor.

He returned from his loss to López with a sixth-round knockout victory against Jackson Marinez on February 13, 2021. Richard challenged former champion Vasiliy Lomachenko of Ukraine in a nearly one-sided battle on December 11, 2021. From round one through round twelve, Lomachenko dominated.

Commey proceeded after some ringside verification in round 8, and Lomachenko won practically all of the following rounds. He was defeated by Lomachenko by unanimous decision.

He most recently competed against Puerto Rican boxer José Pedraza on August 27, 2022, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, and the bout ended in a draw with Pedraza’s record stands at 30-4-1.
