The Duo

Rory Lee was quite popular in songwriting and Joey was focused on her singing. The two people with similar interests in music and even the talent in them got married in 2002.

Did they ever think about forming a duo with each other as the members?

Maybe and maybe not. But they say when a friend suggested not only to be a life partner but also a work partner, they decided to give it a try.

In 2008, a duo- Rory+Joey, was formed. They auditioned for CMT’s reality show ‘Can You Duet’. They went strong having both bonds of singing as well as life duo and won third place.

That’s when their popularity rose. They signed with Vanguard Records and released eight studio albums, three albums produced on their own. Some of them hit charts as well.

Unfortunate turns of life

Rory and Joey took a break in 2014 after knowing about Joey’s pregnancy. They were quite the excited couple. Joey finally gave birth to an angel but at home (quite an experience).

It was said that the child suffered from Down’s Syndrome but parents are parents. No matter what your children are like, they provide them with all their love. So did Rory and Joey.

Another event hit them like a truck. In May 2014, Joey’s cervical cancer was detected. They went to a doctor and suggested surgery to remove the cancer and chemotherapy was not required. So, Joey went through surgery and came out through Operation Room the same as before.

A not long time from then, in June of 2015, Joey’s health started to show complications. It was cancer. Cervical cancer had returned and metastasized to her colon.

Joey again fought cancer going through surgeries and radiation. She would record her songs after the treatments, which just didn’t seem to stop anytime soon but the doctors were still positive until the time when they came to know about Jory’s terminal cancer which was spreading too fast.

She kept fighting but at last, got tired of all of it. Joey was getting hospice care but in February 2016, she was ready to give up. She didn’t want to keep going anymore.

She bid goodbye and went to deep sleep for a week from which no one expected her to wake up. And at last, her death was announced on March 8, 2016, she had stopped breathing and left for heaven.

As per Joey’s wish, a private funeral was organized, and was buried in Feek’s family cemetery in Tennessee.

Rory’s anniversary gift to Joey in heaven

Rory loved his late wife a lot. It could be seen in him. In his blog, he wrote a heart-touching letter about his past anniversary gifts and how careless he used to be while buying one. For their fourteenth year, it was different. Joey was not there.

He wrote:

“Yesterday, June 15th, was our anniversary.  In the early morning, I carried a thermos and our two favorite mugs across the back field and shared a cup of coffee with my bride as the sun came up over the wooden cross with her name on it.  I talked and she listened.  Or at least, I hoped that somewhere, somehow, she could hear me.  And I felt her presence the way I do most days since she’s been gone…in my heart, and in my soul.  And I pulled out my iPhone and pushed play… and we watched a movie trailer together as my tears fell.

This was my gift to her.”

Joey wasn’t so selfish to leave Rory, she had left their angel with them. She brings the same laugh that Joey used to.

“Just like she did for Joey, Indy makes me laugh a lot. She’s the child we were meant to have.”

Rory also has other two children named Heidi and Hopie from his previous marriage with Tamara Gilmer. Since Joey’s death, Rory has been leading a single life with no relationships. He would focus on their three-year-old daughter for now.
