Northern Irish professional golf player, Rory McIlroy, 35 has called it quits to his married life with Erica Stoll. The two were married for nearly seven years before filing for divorce. The marriage is irretrievably broken.

Professional golf player from Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy, 35 and his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll, have separated. The two filed for divorce. One day after gaining victory at the Wells Fargo Championship, Rory submitted his divorce papers at the Palm Beach County, Florida court.

US PGA championship is on and Rory is trying to make his first major win in ten years. He was spotted without his wedding ring. He had it on when he played during the final round of the last weekend’s PGA Tour event.

Representatives of Rory have confirmed the sad news. However, there is no official statement forthcoming from the couple. The rep said:

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

The relationship timeline of the couple

Erica and Rory had met in 2012 during the Ryder Cup in Chicago. At that time, Erica was working for the American PGA. Rory had misread his tee-time for that Sunday’s singles.

On knowing it, Erica quickly arranged for a police escort to bring Rory to the course. He came in time and won the game beating Keegan Bradley.

But they started dating Erica only three years later in 2015. He proposed to her in December 2015 while holidaying in Paris.

Their wedding took place in April 2017 at the famous Ashford Castle in Cong, County Mayo. It was a lavish wedding with tight security in which several celebrities were invited. Stevie Wonder performed at the wedding with his band of 15 pieces.

Erica was a regular at Rory’s tournaments. Their daughter, Poppy was born in September 2020. And now, comes the news of their divorce after their marriage has irretrievably broken.

Rory had requested the court to allow them to enforce their prenuptial agreement and also a shared parenting plan.

The past relationships of Rory

Earlier, Rory was in a romantic relationship with Danish professional tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki. The two dated from 2011 until their split in 2014.

In fact, Rory had even proposed to Caroline on 31 December 2013. They were supposed to wed and wedding invites had already been sent. However, sadly, the two called off their engagement on 21 May 2014. Rory blamed himself for having ended their relationship.

He said:

“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”

Later, Caroline had spoken about their split. She had said that Rory ended their relationship on phone. It was just a brief call and he never contacted her after that one phone call, she said.
