He lost his father when he was just 3 years old

Redding was only three years old when his father, who was traveling with his band in a Beechcraft H18 airplane, died in a plane crash in 1967.

The plane was flying to Truax Field in Madison for performance despite poor weather conditions and warnings not to fly. The pilot radioed for permission to land four miles from their destination, but the plane crashed into Lake Monona.

Along with Redding’s father, the crash also claimed the lives of four other members of the Bar-Kays, their valet, and the pilot. The cause of the crash was never determined.

He and his three siblings were raised by their mother Zelma on the 300-acre Big O Ranch where their dad was buried.
