St. Vincent Reflects on LGBTQ+ Visibility, Calls for Normalization
The revelation surprised many fans, as St. Vincent had kept her personal life relatively private, although she had previously discussed her queer identity.
Clark identified as queer for the first time in 2014, telling Rolling Stone,
“I believe in gender fluidity and sexual fluidity.”
In June 2024, she opened up about her queerness when speaking to Billboard about her album, All Born Screaming.
In backstage interviews and Billboard’s 2024 Pride cover story, Clark reflected on the LGBTQ+ representation at the awards show and throughout the entertainment business.

She pointed out that the presence of LGBTQ+ individuals in the industry and everyday life shouldn’t be considered surprising or newsworthy anymore.
She said at the time,
“There have been plenty of queer people in music. Even if the culture was saying no, there were always queer people in the arts. Please. We have built this, If you’re safe for the TV screen, you also invite an aspect of grift [from the outside world]. Which … I raise an eyebrow at.”
