The cancer diagnosis and its course

In 2016, Stefan was diagnosed with bile-duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) which was in stage 2 and rapidly progressed to stage 4. There was metastasis in the liver and the chances were bleak.

However, the oncology doctors’ team operated on him and removed the cancerous regions from his liver. He was also put on chemotherapy.

The apparent recovery

Around 13 months back, Stefan announced that his chemotherapy and surgery were over and doctors said that for now the cancer is out of his body but was not sure whether it would return again.

He had written at that time:

The damn disease is gone. Until it comes back, whenever that will be, which will hopefully be never. Life is now. It’s almost a miracle that I’m still here.”

Around 9 months back, he had put up a post on his Instagram with a philosophical quote:

The return of the cancer

On 10 March 2018, an emotional Stefan tweeted:

“It’s not until they tell you you’re going to die soon that you realize how short life is. Time is the most valuable thing in life because it never comes back. And whether you spend it in the arms of a loved one or alone in a prison-cell, life is what you make of it. Dream big.”

On one of his fans asked whether it was back, he replied:

“Unfortunately it’s back and this time they can’t operate on it.”

He continued:

“Yesterday, no one could tell what would happen today, only that today might come. Life is like that every minute, we are waiting for it, will it come or will it not, but why? We should always life now because now has come, life is here and only now, so go get it!”

The fans kept pouring in their support on social media.
