“This Is Just My Face, Try Not To Stare”,
she openly talked about her battle with depression, anxiety, and bulimia which is excerpted exclusively in the latest issue of PEOPLE.
She openly talks about her decision to get laparoscopic bariatric surgery after she and her older brother Ahmed, 34, were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. She said:
“I just didn’t want to worry, I truly didn’t want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely [would] worry all the time about losing my toes.”
Her experience regarding the surgery
Gabourey Sidibe tried to lose the weight many times. When she failed in the process many times, she opted for going under the knife. She secretly went under the knife in May 2016.
She shared her experience about the surgery in this way by writing in her wise, witty and unapologetic memoir, which was out in May,
“My surgeon said they’d cut my stomach in half. This would limit my hunger and capacity to eat. My brain chemistry would change and I’d want to eat healthier. I’ll take it! My lifelong relationship with food had to change,”
“The surgery wasn’t the easy way out. I wasn’t cheating by getting it done. I wouldn’t have been able to lose as much as I’ve lost without it.”
Drastic changes in life after the surgery
After the surgery, she has been more conscious about her eating habits. She is following the proper diet with the help of her nutritionist. Also, she has upped her fitness regimen, working out with a trainer, swimming and riding a tricycle around the Empire set.
The decision of major surgery is not the thing she took lightly. She has been struggling much with her look since she was 6 years old. She has overcome many battles of her life. Among them, she had a major battle when her parents split. At the time, she had battled depression, anxiety, and bulimia, which she eventually overcame through therapy.
Her experience about surgery
She shared her experience about the surgery of weight loss in this way.
She also told:
“It has taken me years to realize that what I was born with is all beautiful. I did not get this surgery to be beautiful. I did it so I can walk around comfortably in heels. I want to do a cartwheel. I want not to be in pain every time I walk up a flight of stairs.”
After the long procedure of 10 months, she has started losing weight.
“I have a goal right now, and I’m almost there. And then once I’ve got it, I’ll set another. But my starting weight and my goal weight, they’re personal. If too many people are involved, I’ll shut down.”
“I know I’m beautiful in my current face and my current body. What I don’t know about is the next body,” she writes her in This Is Just My Face. “I admit it, I hope to God I don’t get skinny. If I could lose enough to just be a little chubby, I’ll be over the moon! Will I still be beautiful then? S—. Probably. My beauty doesn’t come from a mirror. It never will.”
Also, the American Horror Story album has come to appreciate her appearance, no matter her dress size.
“There’s nothing ugly about me. Anyone trying to convince me that I am — and it’s usually me — is wasting her time. I was in a war with my body for a long time. If I’d started treating it better sooner, I wouldn’t have spent so many years hating myself. But I love my body now.
The star rose her fame after appearing in playing the titular role in Precious in 2009.
