Despite proposals from investors to create a physical presence in New York, they decided to accept Vivian’s parents’ offer to purchase a restaurant in Kinston. She and Knight moved to North Carolina in 2005, and Chef & the Farmer launched in 2006 in a downtown structure that had previously been a mule stable.
However, more than 60% of the ingredients utilized in the restaurant are sourced from within a 90-mile radius. The Chef & Farmer building burned down in 2012 and had to be rebuilt.
Similarly, in 2013, she and her husband Knight opened the Boiler Room, a casual restaurant next to Chef & the Farmer that serves oysters and burgers.
