Vivian married Ben Knight, a coworker at Voyage. The two then started a soup delivery business out of their Harlem apartment, which involved freezing soup in the bathtub.

Despite proposals from investors to create a physical presence in New York, they decided to accept Vivian’s parents’ offer to purchase a restaurant in Kinston. She and Knight moved to North Carolina in 2005, and Chef & the Farmer launched in 2006 in a downtown structure that had previously been a mule stable.

However, more than 60% of the ingredients utilized in the restaurant are sourced from within a 90-mile radius. The Chef & Farmer building burned down in 2012 and had to be rebuilt.

Similarly, in 2013, she and her husband Knight opened the Boiler Room, a casual restaurant next to Chef & the Farmer that serves oysters and burgers. Vivian has written a cookbook and memoir called Deep Run Roots – Stories and Recipes from my Corner of the South, which was published in October 2016.

After its debut, the book remained on the New York Times Bestseller List for three weeks. In 2017, the book earned four IACP Cookbook Awards: Cookbook of the Year, Julia Child First Book Award, Outstanding Restaurant Cookbook, and Outstanding Cookbook in the General Category.

On December 12, 2017, the pair established Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria in Wilmington, North Carolina’s warehouse district. Howard also published her second cookbook, “This Will Make It Taste Good: A New Path to Simple Cooking,” in 2020.

As a result, the cookbook is organized around a core collection of tasty bases that serve as crucial components in the subsequent recipe section. In 2021, she will establish her first restaurant, Lenoir, in Charleston, South Carolina, which will have a companion café, Handy + Hot.
