Yi Jianlian started playing basketball professionally after signing a contract with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association.

He was not expected to enter the NBA Draft until 2009 due to the Chinese Basketball Association rule which didn’t allow players to leave for foreign until they are 22.

Yi Jianlian withdrew from the 2006 NBA draft saying he wasn’t good and later in the 2007 NBA draft he was selected by Milwaukee Bucks.

On 29 August 2007, he signed a multi-year rookie contract and started playing from there. Yao Ming praised his play saying his statistics are far better than his. In 2007 December he was named the Rookie of the Month.

He missed most of his matches due to his knee injuries. On 26 June 2008, he was traded to New Jersey Nets.

During the 2009-20 seasons, he suffered several injuries which forced him to miss most of his matches. He was traded to Washington Wizards along with a $3 million cash consideration on 29 June 2010.

During the 2011 NBA lockout, he signed a one-year contract to return to Guangdong Southern Tigers.

After returning on 6 January 2012, he signed a one-year contract with Dallas Mavericks but was assigned immediately to the Texas Legends.

On 22 August 2016, he signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $8 million but was soon released on 24 October 2016.

Then Yi Jianlian returned to Guangdong Southern Tigers and started playing from there. He is still playing for the Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association. He also played with the Chinese national basketball team during the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.
