‘Back to Black’ by Amy Winehouse reaches a new milestone

Amy Winehouse‘s legacy continues to live on!

More than a decade after the singer’s untimely passing, her 2007 hit music video Back to Black crossed a billion views on YouTube, making her part of a certain impressive group of elites to achieve the feat.

The black-and-white video, directed by Phil Griffin, shows Winehouse attending a funeral procession for a dead romance. She stands among a group of mourners at the burial place, where an imagery gravestone reads, “R.I.P. the Heart of Amy Winehouse.

However, that imagery was removed after her tragic death in 2011 from alcohol poisoning. She was only 27.

Back to Black was written by Mark Ronson and Amy herself. It showed her troubled relationship with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who briefly dumped her for an ex just two years before their 2007 reconciliation and wedding. The couple later divorced in 2009.

In the song, Amy sings that she is missing the relationship, no matter how tough it has been. She sings in the chorus,

“We only said goodbye with words / I died a hundred times / You go back to her / And I go back to black,”

Back to Black was a part of the album of the same name which Winehouse released in 2007. It initially parked at No. 25 on the UK Singles Chart that year and reached at No. 8 after her death.

Since then, the song has become one of her most recognizable hits and received many notable cover versions, including one by Beyonce and Andre 3000 for the 2013 film The Great Gatsby.

The Uptown Funk musician added,

“Next day she came in and wrote these incredible lyrics, which she scribbled in the back room. And for the first time ever maybe, here are the very first vocals that she did,”

In yet another video, Mark responded to a fan’s comment that read, ”This made me tear up to hear her raw takes.
