Whitworth was redshirted in 2001, therefore he missed the season. He began every game as a redshirt freshman in 2002, and The Sporting News and Football Writers Association named him to their first team of Freshman All-Americans. In all fourteen of the games, he started in 2003 as a sophomore.

After Oklahoma’s Derrick Strait (53 starts, 2000–2003), he had the second-most career starts in NCAA Division I history throughout his 52-year career from 2002 to 2005. In the second round (55th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft, Whitworth was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals. On September 10, he played his first NFL special teams game against Kansas City.

Andrew and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a three-year contract on March 9, 2017. He qualified for his fourth Pro Bowl during his rookie campaign with the Rams. According to his peers, he was placed 87th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2018.

Andrew declared his retirement on March 15, 2022, following 16 seasons. He became a commentator on Thursday Night Football on Amazon after retiring in 2022.
