Mention of an androgynous mind by Barack Obama in his letter to ex-girlfriend raised doubts about his sexuality!

Sometimes, something mentioned otherwise in print could sow seeds of doubts in the minds of the readers, though the person writing it might have not meant it the way people believe it to be! This happened in the case of the ex-President of the USA, Barack Obama.

Barack had talked about his androgynous mind in one of the letters to one of his ex-girlfriends, Alex McNear. People had suspicions about his sexual orientation when this letter emerged on the internet.

The ex-President of the USA, Barack Obama is the husband of Michelle Obama. She was the First Lady of the USA during his tenure as the American President.

But before marrying Michelle, Barack had relationships with other women in the past. He was dating Alex McNear in 1982 when both were studying at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.

David Maraniss who has penned the book Barack Obama: The Story states that after splitting from Alex, Barack started a relationship with Genevieve Cook. David adds that Genevieve was his true love.

After separating from Genevieve, Barack started dating Sheila Miyoshi Jager. She was his greatest love. Barack in the book Dreams from My Father had said that this relationship was warm and hidden. Sheila had told biographer David Garrow:

“In the winter of 86, when we visited my parents, he asked me to marry him.”

David Garrow gets hold of Barack’s love letter

David Garrow was trying to find more details about Barack’s ex-girlfriend for his 2017 book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama. He came to know about his three ex-girlfriends. Alex McNear also showed David a redacted version of the letter that Barack had written to her when they were romancing. She said that the redacted part was about homosexuality. In August 2023, David gave an interview to Tablet Mag in which he said:

“When Alex showed me the letters from Barack, she redacted one paragraph in one of them and just said, ‘It’s about homosexuality’.”

Ten days later, New York Post managed to lay its hands on the letter. The letter was 40 years old and written ten years before Barack wed Michelle.

The media outlet New York Post revealed that the ex-President had written these statements in the love letter to Alex:

“In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life. You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination.”
“My mind is androgynous to a great extent and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men. But, in returning to the body, I see that I have been made a man, and physically in life, I choose to accept that contingency.”

That made people suspect that Barack was homosexual and had gay fantasies. Later, Barack married Michelle and has two beautiful daughters with her: Malia, 25 and Sasha, 22.
