Arnold Schwarzenegger detained at the airport over a luxury watch
Arnold Schwarzenegger was detained by the customs department at Munich airport on Wednesday, January 17, for about three hours upon arrival from Los Angeles.
The authorities stopped him after he allegedly failed to declare a luxury watch, which hadn’t been registered, he brought over from the US.
The watch is custom-made by the luxury Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, exclusively made for the actor.
On the back of the watch, an image of Schwarzenegger as The Terminator was designed. The worth of the watch is about $50,000 (€46,000).
The former California governor, 76, brought the watch with him to sell at a charity auction organized by his climate foundation in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

The event took place in the Austrian ski resort of Kitzbühel on Thursday night, January 18, to benefit the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiatives.
Fortunately, the actor was allowed to take the watch with him following his three-hour detention.
He was released after paying a fine of €35,000, including €4,000 in tax and a €5,000 penalty.
According to the EU rule, anyone arriving with “cash or certain valuable items” over €10,000 must declare during international travel.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was never asked to fill out a declaration
Following the detention, Arnols’ representative Daniel Ketchell stated to The Washington Post, clarifying that they were unaware of the process. He said,
“None of the people I know and sat next to on our commercial flight filled out a declaration form, including Arnold — he got to customs, and they told him he was ‘randomly’ selected to be searched, During the search, he answered every single question the customs officer asked, so to say he didn’t declare anything is 100% false.”
The actor has reportedly cooperated with the officers during the investigation and due process.
They faced several issues while paying to pre-pay potential taxes on the watch. The source revealed,
“The officers failed to use a credit card machine for an hour until they gave up and brought Arnold to a bank and asked him to withdraw cash from an ATM to pay, The ATM they brought him to had a limit too low and the bank was closed. When he returned, a new officer brought a new credit card machine that worked.”
Did the watch sell at an auction?
Yes, the Audemars Piguet watch was purchased by an entrepreneur and investor and Arnold’s longtime friend Klemens Hallman.
Klemens buy the watch for roughly €270,000 ($294,000).
According to a press release for the event, the proceeds from the sale will go towards the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiatives.
The organization was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger that strives to take action against climate change.
