Ashlyn Harris talks about her mental health post-divorce
American former soccer player, Ashlyn Harris, 38 divorced her husband, Ali Krieger, 39. It was a public split and she and her children faced a lot of cyber-bullying. Recently, Ashlyn spoke about it at a Women’s health event on 16 July 2024. She said:
‘I’m navigating a divorce that’s been really hard,’
‘I can’t control everyone else’s reaction. I can’t control everyone else’s opinions of me. I have to own myself and my body and be present and be human,’
For Ashlyn, the well-being and safety of her two children matters the most:
‘My storm doesn’t have to be theirs. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through — dealing with a divorce with two very young children and not letting them see or feel my storm and rain,’
‘It’s a really big test.’
The relationships of Ashlyn
Ashlyn met Ali in 2010 when both were teammates on the USWNT. The two struck a friendship and later, romance blossomed between them. Their engagement took place in 2019. And the same year, the two walked down the aisle together.
Their relationship became troubled but it came to public knowledge in September 2023 when Ashlyn put in her divorce papers. Soon after that, she started a relationship with American actress, Sophia Bush, 42 and moved in with her.
Ashlyn has two kids: Sloane, 3, and Ocean, 2. Both she and Ali share the joint custody of the kids.
Sophia Bush supported Ashlyn
The former soccer player was subjected to a lot of cyberbullying. In November 2023, she had to write on her Instagram to stop it. She wrote:
‘Several weeks ago, a process that had been ongoing privately for some time became public,’ Harris wrote at the time.’
‘Ending a relationship after almost 13 years of friendship, teammate-ship, marriage and co-parenting (many of them good years) is a decision that was not made lightly,’
‘The online hate that has happened since has been one of the most personally devastating experiences of my life. Words matter. The cheering on abuse, the people clamoring to encourage me to commit suicide, and the cruel words spoken about my children, and who I am as a mother? Those words matter.’
Ashlyn credits Sophia for helping her during her mental struggles. She stated at the panel:
‘I say this often to Sophia — if I’m walking into a fire, I have to be equipped for that fire. I have to get my fire suit, I’ve got to get my tools, I gotta get my oxygen mask, I gotta get my water hose,’
‘I’m f—ing breaking down that door and I’m finding a way [out]. It might not be an easy window — it might be a back door, it might be climbing through a roof. But I’m equipped to handle the process.’
