Police investigate after former Tata chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident

Cyrus Mistry, Tata’s former chairman passed away in a road accident while traveling to Mumbai.

The billionaire, 54, was one of the two people who died when the Mercedes car they were in hit a divider in the road while crossing a bridge.

The Maharashtra police also confirmed that the other two inside the vehicle were critically injured and were rushed to the hospital.

A District medical officer confirmed that autopsies would be carried out at a Mumbai hospital on the two who passed away on the highway near the city.

Mistry is famous as the ex-chairman of Tata Sons, one of the biggest Indian businesses that owned Jaguar, Land Rover, and the Taj Hotels to name a few.

In 2011, the Irish-Indian businessman made headlines when he became Tata’s first successor head as a person not directly related to the Tata lineage.

Before becoming famous for getting into Tata, he was merely the son of Indian Construction billionaire Pallonji Mistry and even worked as head of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. It was a successful construction company for creating skyscrapers and stadiums in India.

His wealthy family was a major stakeholder in the Tata group which operates in more than 100 countries. The group offers many products like salt, steel, and software and was successful in creating a revenue of $130bn last year.

PM Narendra Modi paid homage to the businessman

In 2016, Mistry had to resign from his post after people criticized his performance.

Ratan Tata replaced him as the head man whom Mistry had himself replaced just 4 years ago.

The case gained immense public interest and there was a lengthy legal battle in which the county’s top court finally ruled in Tata’s favor.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and wrote:

”Mistry was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess”.

The Maharashtra Government has ordered a police probe into this matter.

Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran shared a statement that read:

“I am deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely demise of Mr. Cyrus Mistry,”

“He had a passion for life and it is really tragic that he passed away at such a young age. My deepest condolences and prayers for his family in these difficult times.”

Many business figures, including India’s richest man Gautam Adani, expressed their sorrow for the businessman’s untimely passing.
