Hield won the team’s Most Inspirational Award as a freshman at Oklahoma, averaging 7.8 points per contest. After averaging 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game as a sophomore, he was chosen for the second team of the Big 12 All-Start.

The New Orleans Pelicans selected Hield with the sixth overall choice in the 2016 NBA draft on June 23, 2016. He signed a contract with the Pelicans on July 22, 2016. Hield started the 2017–18 season as a starter but, after seven games, moved to the bench to fill in as the team’s sixth man. Buddy set a new season best on January 11, 2023, with 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 7–15 three-point shooting in a loss to the New York Knicks.

Hield changed his uniform number for the first time in his career before the 2023–24 season, going from 24 to 7, the number that the Pacers had previously worn. In a three-team trade with the San Antonio Spurs, he was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers on February 8, 2024. In his 76ers debut on February 9, he scored 20 points and disheveled six assists in a 127-121 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
