Busta Rhymes island

The island is actually a 40-by-40 foot island in Mill Pond, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and is named after Hip Hop artist Busta Rhymes. According to Slate magazine, since 2009, the island has been regularly visited and tended by Kevin O’Brien.

“It’s a very small little island [with] rope-swinging, blueberries, and … stuff Busta would enjoy,”

O’Brien told Boston.com almost a decade ago.

Caretaker

Slate magazine in 2009 published a story on Kevin O’Brien. Kevin, then 27, would frequently visit the island with friends for a hangout or with family. He said he began to take care of the island in 2005. He is an unofficial caretaker of the island.

Busta also voluntarily planted fruit and cleaned up after trash left behind by other visitors. Kevin O’Brien felt like it was a second home. So, he thought he needed to properly name the island.

The name he decided should be unforgettable as well as fitting. Thus he named the island Busta Rhymes. Since a teenager, Kevin has been a fan of the rapper.

Attempt to name officially

Kevin O’Brien did attempt to make the island’s name official by submitting a proposal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

However, he received a reply that in order to name a piece of land after a celebrity, the individual must have been dead for at least 5 years. And so the island was never officially named Busta Rhymes Island.

Determined Kevin was able to geotag Busta Rhymes Island on Google Maps.

Unofficial name

According to Angela Snell, director of parks and recreation in Shrewsbury, the island has no name.

Snell said “It’s just a small pond in the Town of Shrewsbury. And residents use it for canoeing or fishing. There’s no swimming at the pond, so it’s really just to enjoy nature and that kind of stuff.”
