Dave started his drumming career at the age of 20, with a punk band called Loud Fast Rules, together with Karl Mueller, and Dan Murphy. They changed their band name in 1983 to “Soul Asylum”.

Later, the same year, the two became part of Twin Tone Records and released their first studio album, on August 24, 1984, titled “Say What You Will”.

The band gained more success on MTV and VH1, with the 1993 track “Runaway Train”. Dave’s debut solo album Faces & Names was released in 2002 in Ultimatum Music.

In 1994, Pirner had a small role in the movie Reality Bites. His first solo album was titled “Faces & Names” in 2002 on Ultimatum Music. He later published a book Loud Fast Words: Soul Asylum Collected Lyrics in 2020.

Some of the albums from the band, “Soul Asylum” were Candy from a Stranger (1998), The Silver Lining (2006), Delayed Reaction (2012), and Change of Fortune (2016). Their single hit was Somebody to Shove, Black Gold, Runaway Train, and Misery.
