Talking about his parents, He was born to Mark Maye (father) and Aimee Maye (mother). His father was also a footballer who played as quarterback for the Tar Heels from 1983 to 1987

Talking about his career, Drake Maye started his college career appearing in four games for Redshirted over the course of the season. He played in the replacement of starter Sam Howell when he was injured and unable to play against Wofford.

In the 2022 season, Maye and Criswell battled for the starting QB spot when Sam Howell departed for the NFL.  On August 22, 2o22, he was named the starter after a very close position battle.

He finished 29/37 pass attempts for 294 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed four times for 55 yards in his first career start against Florida A&M. In his first start, he became the first Tar Heel quarterback to throw for five touchdowns.

Drake Maye also helped to win his team Tar Heel against App State by throwing 352 yards and four touchdowns and adding 76 yards.

Likewise, Maye and his team had to face loss 45-32 loss against Notre Dame. Later, he threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns ran 13 times for 73 yards for his team, and won the battle against Virginia Tech by 45-10 in Chap Hill. Maye completed his first full season as the starter with a 9–5 record.

In the 2o23 season as Tar Heel’s starting QB, he received several preseason honors once again. He was named Preseason ACC Player of the Year by the conference. As Phil Longo departed for Wisconsin, he will be working with a new offensive coordinator in Chip Lindsey.
