Ed Snider and his friend Jerry Lilienfield co-founded Edge Ltd. in the 1960s, and the company was fairly successful. They finally shuttered the corporation, allowing Snider to purchase the Philadelphia Eagles in 1964 with Jerry Wolman (a builder) and the attorney for Snider’s brother-in-law Earl Foreman.
Snider was given the option of purchasing a 7% ownership in the team and later served as vice president and treasurer, supervising the Eagles’ day-to-day operations. Similarly, on February 8, 1966, the NHL granted Philadelphia a conditional franchise, which would later be known as the Philadelphia Flyers and began play in 1967.
Snider and Wolman discontinued their business collaboration and exchanged some assets in the summer of 1967. Snider took over as majority owner of the Flyers, while Wolman became sole owner of the Spectrum.
Throughout his career, Snider started or bought a number of enterprises, the most notable of which were PRISM, a regional premium TV channel, and WIP, the first all-sports radio station. Despite a protracted dispute with 76ers owner Harold Katz, the city of Philadelphia, and the city of Camden, New Jersey, Snider personally funded the CoreStates Center, which is now known as the Wells Fargo Center.
Snider then became a significant investor in the Foxwoods slots casino, which was proposed for Philadelphia’s waterfront in 2005. Faced with widespread opposition at the original proposed location, proponents of the slots casino opted to seek a new location in the Center City district, near Philadelphia’s Chinatown community, in September 2008.
