Fairuza Balk is an American actress. She is best known for her work as Dorothy Gale in Disney’s 1985 movie, Return to Oz.

She is also known for her appearances in Valmont, The Craft, The Island of Dr. Moreau, American History X, The Waterboy, Almost Famous, and Personal Velocity: Three Portraits.

Fairuza Balk’s birth name is Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse. She was born on May 21, 1974, in Point Reyes, California, United States. Her mother is Cathryn Balk and her father is Solomon Feldthouse.

Cathryn Balk studied, performed, and taught the ethnic and traditional dance forms of many countries such as Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, and Spain.

Solomon Feldthouse is one of the founding members of the 1960s psychedelic rock band Kaleidoscope. He is also a folk musician.

Her parents separated soon after her birth. Until age two, Balk lived in Cloverdale, California with her mother. They then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where Fairuza grew up. Fairuza joined the Royal Academy of Ballet at the early age of 4.

Growing up in a show business family, she began to love acting. At the tender age of 6, she began acting. They moved from London to Paris for a role and remained there for six months. They again returned to Vancouver.

She remained in London with her mother until 1988. They then headed to Paris. Their 15-year-old Fairuza starred in Valmont (1989).

The next year they returned to Vancouver where she enrolled in high school. Despite being a movie star she was shy in class. She ended up doing correspondence courses.

Balk was the love interest in the movie The Waterboy (1998) alongside Adam Sandler and had a major role in American History X (1998).
