Iggy Azalea goes candid about her mental health issues

Iggy Azalea, 27 opened up about her mental health. She said that she struggled with anger issues and poor mental health and found it difficult to cope with it.

Hence she decided to visit a special ‘mental retreat’ of 2 weeks duration to clear her mind. She wanted her mental health to get back on track and she is happy that she opted to go for it.

Iggy said:

“I’ve never really sat down and had an honest conversation with professional people. It was good to say something to somebody who could give me the tools and information on how to make my life manageable when I’m feeling those things. So it was really useful – I’m glad that I went.”

Iggy has realized that there is no facility within the music industry that allows artists to access mental health treatment when needed. She has observed that athletes have easy access to physiotherapy that helps them to get back to their best form.

But in the case of the musicians, there is no such assistance for any mental health problems. She feels that the music industry should have such a community to help them cope with the mental problems they are highly likely to face. Elaborating on it, Iggy said:

“I really wish there was more of an infrastructure within the music industry to make sure that the artists have people they can go to. Like physical therapists in sports. The teams have people looking out for [players], that make sure they’re okay in every element, and the music business doesn’t have that – they just throw you out there. You get used to it and you’re still successful, but it’s a lot to deal with.”

Iggy feels that after her mental treatment, she now has a better perspective on things. She revealed to the Billboard magazine:

“I’m still here, cleaning up the mess now. At least now, though, I have some perspective on it. And I will say that’s good, because it’s hard to resolve things with anything when you’re still in the thick of it.”

How did she decide to go for the treatment?

Iggy states that the pressure of the spotlight and her trauma made her mentally ill. She credits Demi Lovato for inspiring her to go for the treatment. Iggy had a history of feuds with fellow artists and the press. She recalls that her new management team made her aware of the rising problems.

She recalled:

“They were like, We think you’re really talented and you can go to the studio and make hits all day, but we don’t know if, you know, someone says something about you and you have a reaction it could ruin a branding deal. We need you to go and speak to these people and make sure that you’re mentally prepared to come out with new music.'”

Though hesitant at first, Iggy later realized the importance of it and went for it.

What was the treatment?

Iggy’s rep confirmed that she indeed has undergone “intensive therapy” at a two-week “mental retreat” in Arizona. It was also targeted against the depression that she had. She has tons of regrets about the past but has great hopes for the future. She said:

“I don’t beat myself up about it at the same time, because it, everything, was like landing on Mars. I just think it’s a lot for anybody to digest.”
