Mary Lou Retton is battling a rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life in the ICU, her daughter said on Tuesday.

The daughter of the Olympic gold-winning gymnast, McKenna Kelley shared in a post on her Instagram Story with a link to a Spotfund page dedicated to her 55-year-old supermom,

“My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,”

“She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she not insured.”

She continued,

“We ask that if you could help in any way, that 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill,”

The fundraiser aims to reach  $50,000 and as of Tuesday, 109 donors had contributed nearly $8,000.

Talking about Mary’s career, she is one of the most famous names in the world of gymnastics.

She made history at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles by becoming the first American to win an individual all-around gold medal.

What’s more interesting is that she underwent knee surgery just weeks before the event and still managed to record perfect 10s on the floor and vault to edge out Romania’s Ecaterina Szabo by 0.05 points.

She also won silver medals in the vault and team event, and bronze medals in the uneven bars and the floor.

After the Olympics win, Retton became Sports Illustrated’s “Sportswoman of the Year” and featured on a Wheaties box.

In 1985, she won the American Cup all-around competition for the third time before retiring in 1986.

Despite ending her successful athletic career, Retton still managed to be in the spotlight. She made cameos in movies and TV shows including Glee, Baywatch, Knot’s Landing, and Naked Gun 33+1⁄3: The Final Insult. She also competed on season 27 of Dancing with the Stars.

In 1997, Retton was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She also has a park and street named after her in her hometown of Fairview, West Virginia.

The athlete and her ex-husband share four daughters: Shayla, Skyla, Emma and McKenna.

McKenna even followed in her mom’s footsteps and competed as a gymnast for Louisiana State University.
