  • A promising football player from the University of Montana has died due to an apparent suicide at the tender age of 22.

Andrew Harris and his untimely death

Andrew Harris played at the defensive end at the University of Montana. He committed suicide and died this Tuesday 22 January 2019. He was only 22 years old. The reason for his suicide is not immediately known.

His school released an official statement:

“The University of Montana is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of one of its students, Andrew Harris. Harris was a senior majoring in business management from Kalispell, Montana. He graduated in 2015 from Glacier High School and was a member of the Grizzly football team.”

Andrew’s athletic director Kent Haslam also confirmed the death of their student and said:

“All of us in Grizzly Athletics were saddened to hear of Andrew’s passing. On behalf of our department and the more than 300 student athletes here at UM, we end our deepest condolences and heartfelt thoughts to the Harris family, and all those who knew and loved Andrew,”

The school has decided to observe a moment of silence before the basketball game of the men’s team against Idaho State to be held at Dahlberg Arena this Thursday as a mark of tribute to the departed soul.

The police investigation into Andrew Harris’ death

Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh said that Andrew’s death is been investigated as a case of suicide since he was found dead in his home.

Brenda Bassett who is the spokesperson for the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the coroner has also ruled it a case of suicide.

Andrew was a redshirt senior who had completed his junior with the Grizzlies. In the year 2018, Andrew had taken part in 8 games. Overall, he participated in 11 games until his death.

He was usually on the special teams for football. Andrew used to represent his high school in football. He was a first-team all-state player for the undefeated team of Glacier High School and was Class AA state champion in 2014.

His father and brother also played football. His father is Greg Harris and he was on the football team for Montana from 1971-1975.

Andrew’s elder brother Josh also played defensive like Andrew and he was with the Grizzlies team from 2008-2012. Sadly, such a promising footballer lost his life.
