RIP Gordon Sparks! Into the Cancer Battle of BBC Radio Presenter
Gordon Sparks, the radio host while he was still undergoing chemotherapy and other treatment at St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth. His co-presenter, listener, and other stars are also heartbroken knowing that the radio legend passed away.
Stephanie Marshall, head of BBC South and South West made the announcement of his death stating,
“It is a very sad day for BBC Radio Devon. Our hearts go out to Gordon’s friends, family, and faithful listeners. Gordon was a broadcasting legend – honest and brave through the toughest times. He will be missed dearly.”
The late radio presenter who commentated on Plymouth Argyle games for 32 years died at 61 after losing his cancer battle. Meanwhile, His survivors are his wife Heather, daughters Kirsty and Holly, and his granddaughter.

Tributes to Late BBC Radio host Gordon Sparks
A BBC executive and the editor of Radio Devon, Mark Grinnell who gave Sparks the breakfast show spoke about the loss to the radio saying,
“Massive loss to Plymouth, massive loss to Devon, massive loss to the BBC. A great broadcaster. He’ll be remembered by many listeners I know as the voice of Argyle, voice on the breakfast show on their radio station. He’ll be remembered to us as a dear friend and colleague.”
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies also paid tribute to the late presenter through her Twitter account, tweeting: ‘
“Sad to hear we’ve lost @SparksyOnRadio Gordon Sparks the sporting voice of Plymouth, fellow janner & friend.”
His colleague from BBC Radio, Angela Kalwaites also penned a tribute to her late friend on Twitter:
“We will all miss our friend and colleague so much – he was definitely one-of-a-kind with a massive heart and sense of humour.”
Tim Davie was deeply saddened on hearing the death news which he mourned over the statement of condolence,
“His passion for where he lived came through in every show. Gordon will be remembered fondly as the voice of BBC Radio Devon and of Plymouth Argyle but, most of all, as a friend to all of his listeners.”
