Why was Taraneh Alidoosti arrested?

September 16, 2022, was a black day for the Iranian people. The Islamic Republic executed Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian of Kurdish descent, after imprisoning her for allegedly violating the nation’s dress code. This action has sparked protests that have rocked the Islamic Republic.

On the day of her death, the actress posted a photo to Instagram with the caption saying:

“Damnation to this captivity. Don’t forget what Iran’s women go through”.

Following that, on November 9, the actress daringly posted a picture of herself without a headscarf, holding a paper with “Woman, life, freedom” written on it which is the main slogan of the protests.

Iranian protester Majidreza Rahnavard, 23, was publicly hanged on December 12 just days after Shekari was put to death. The death penalty has been imposed on nine additional suspects who were detained in relation to the incident.

Since the protests began, thousands of individuals have been jailed, and 400 have been given prison terms of up to 10 years for their role in the unrest, according to Iran’s judiciary.

On December 8, Alidoosti posted on social media for the first time. The same day, the government executed the first protester, 23-year-old Mohsen Shekari.

“Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor. Every international organisation who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity.

On 17 December 2022, Iranian authorities arrested her.
