Irene Cara, known for singing the title tracks from the 1980s movies “Fame” and “Flashdance”, passed away at the age of 63.

Her death was confirmed by her publicist, Judith A. Moose, via Twitter on Saturday, November 26.

“It is with profound sadness that on behalf of the family I announce the passing of Irene Cara. The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer passed away in her Florida home,”

“Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.”

Moose then went on to request privacy as her family mourns the death of their beloved Irene. The statement then continued,

“She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

Irene Cara began her career in her early childhood as a child actor, dancer, and singer. At the age of 13, she made her regular appearance in the 1970s children’s show The Electric Company. She was also a member of the band, the Short Circus.

Similarly, she appeared in a major role in theater, television, and film, including the title role in “Sparkle,” a 1976 film about a family of female singers in the 1960s. The film was later remade in 2012.

Cara got her career breakthrough in the movie musical “Fame” where she portrayed the role of Coco Hernandez, a student at a school modeled after the high school now known as Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

She also sang four songs in the film including the title track of the film, “Fame” and another single, the ballad “Out Here on My Own”.

Similarly, Irene won the Oscar in 1984 for the best original song as one of the writers of “Flashdance … What a Feeling,” for the soundtrack to the 1983 romantic drama dance film Flashdance.
