When asked about her personal life in an interview with Irish Independent, she said,

“I learnt very early in my career to keep that side of my life precious – because I’m actually a very private person. You don’t say anything. That’s my haven. I mean, I don’t have kids – I think that’s pretty apparent… but it’s not something I talk about. Another interviewer was saying to me: ‘You’ve done a really good job. I’ve looked up all that stuff and I can find out nothing.’ Well, good.”

More on Liz’s family background

Liz Bonnin was born into not-so-well-off family background. She is of French ethnicity. Her family had migrated to Ireland when she was only nice. Her family worked as slaves and they were not treated as human beings.

When she read about her family, she became very emotional and says,

“I can’t read anymore. Human beings being treated as commodities. I thought I was prepared. My reaction shocked me. It’s when you name people and you put a price on them and you see the ages. The cost of the woman, and then how much all of her children cost, down to the baby. It was really hard to see.”

She added,

“You think you know the story of slavery – they were wealthy white families and the husband was treating many of the slaves as his concubines. That was the way that it was. But according to the historian, my family’s story was extremely rare and the exception to the rule.”
