What happened to Jamie Dornan during his Portugal trip?
Actor Jamie Dornan was in hospital after having heart attack symptoms caused by toxic caterpillars during his recent trip to Portugal.
Last year, at a golfing resort, Gordon Smart and I both fell ill and were taken to the hospital. He subsequently shared news about the actor’s health issues.
Recalling the terrible getaway on BBC’s The Good, the Bad and the Unexpected podcast, he said that they initially thought the health issue had something to do with them drinking too much the night before.
Surprisingly, they were later informed that the symptoms were showing because of a run-in with processionary caterpillars, which are toxic.
According to Forest Research, ”Pine processionary moth caterpillars have tiny hairs containing an irritating protein that causes painful skin, eye, and throat irritations.”
Just a day into what would later turn into a nightmare vacation, Smart said that he started feeling a “tingling in his left hand and tickling in his left arm” that made him think it was “the sign of the start of a heart attack.”
He said,
“Now, I’m a fairly healthy guy but once you start thinking, you’re having a heart attack, you’re pretty sure that you’re convincing yourself that you are having one,”
After rushing to the hospital and being under the care of doctors and nurses, Smart was discharged.

What did Jamie’s friend say about the actor’s condition?
Back at the hotel, he saw Jamie hooked up to medical equipment.
Smart recalled,
“Jamie said, ‘Dear me. Gordon, about 20 minutes after you left, my left arm went numb, my left leg went numb, my right leg went numb, and I found myself in the back of an ambulance,”
“Anyway, as he left the hospital, the paramedics asked them for a selfie, which is really what you want when you’re being wheeled out of a hospital room.”
A week later, the doctor told Smart that toxic caterpillars might have caused their symptoms.
The actor’s friend said,
“And it turns out that there are caterpillars on golf courses in the south of Portugal that have been killing people’s dogs and giving men in their 40s heart attacks,”
He added,
“It turns out we’d brushed up against hairy processionary caterpillars and have been very lucky to come out of that one alive.”
“So there’s my story; the good news is it wasn’t a caffeine overdose, it wasn’t a hangover — it was a poisonous, toxic caterpillar,”
