Joe Biden and his Christmas vacation interruption

The current President of the USA, Joe Biden, 81 was in a holiday mood. He was at the hot vacation spot in Nantucket, the tiny, isolated island that is situated off Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

He was shopping for the upcoming Christmas with his family. There was a Christmas tree lighting event on the island and the first family was enjoying it.

And then suddenly, there were lots of protests against Joe. The protestors were angry about his unfair stance on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They raised slogans and chanted ‘genocide’. Some raised placards that read:

“Free Palestine.”
“End apartheid.”

The protestors also chanted:

“Biden, Biden, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide,”

Joe and his wife Jill and their kids are staying at the house of their friend, David Rubenstein. They had done so on their previous visit to the island too. They arrived in Nantucket on 21 November 2023 for a few days of holiday.

Previous protest incidents

This is not the first time that Joe has faced these protests. During the same vacation, when the president was taking a stroll down Broad Street, there came a small group of people who were discontent with the way Joe had handled the tense situation in the Middle East.

These protestors had shouted Free Palestine and Ceasefire. Some applauded the President as he walked past them.

The protests also happened when he visited a local bookstore with his grandkids. It is a tradition to pay a visit to the local bookstore there. On this, Joe had said:

“We can’t come without going to the bookstore. We’ve got a tradition.”

But this time, the visit was marred by the chants from discontent protestors outside the bookstore.

The protestors could not be silenced despite local law authorities trying to intervene.

The USA’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war

War has been raging between Israel and Hamas, Palestine since 7 October 2023. The world seems to be watching mutely while thousands of innocent civilians of Israel and Palestine lost their lives in the indiscriminate bombings and attacks.

Politics is happening on this issue from world countries with nothing much being done to save innocent lives including those of children and women in the war-ridden zone.

Mediaite reported two days back that Joe Biden played a major role in bringing about a hostage deal between the warring sides, Israel and Hamas. He announced it during a press conference meeting at the White Elephant in Nantucket.

International partners that included Qatar, Egypt, along with the United States of America played a key role in negotiating this deal.

As per this new deal between Hamas and Israel, Israel will release 150 prisoners of Palestine that it is holding captive. It will also give a pause to the fighting for four days on humanitarian grounds. And in exchange for this, Hamas will free fifty hostages.
