Liam Payne dies after falling from a hotel balcony

It’s a sad day for all the One Direction fans. Liam Payne, 31, the band’s former member has passed away.

On Wednesday, reports came that the British singer-songwriter fell from the balcony of the third floor of his hotel room at CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

According to the Buenos Aires police, the fall resulted in grave injuries and medics confirmed him dead on the spot.

Pablo Policicchio, the spokesperson for the Security Ministry of Buenos Aires municipality, told the Associated Press that the singer “had thrown himself from the balcony of his room.”

The spokesperson also said that cops got an emergency call from the hotel for an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

When they got there, the police found his body in the hotel courtyard, says Policicchio.

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, explained on Argentina’s Todo Noticias TV channel that the What Makes You Beautiful hitmaker fell 13-14 meters and “suffered severe injuries that provoked his immediate death.”

“We arrived in time to try and revive him, but there was nothing we could do,” Crescenti said. He added that the authorities are fully investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and they are also performing an autopsy on him.

It is not sure whether the fall was intentional or accidental. Just hours before his death, Payne shared a Snapchat video saying he was having a ‘lovely day.’

TMZ who became the first source to break the news obtained a photo of the singer’s body lying on the hotel’s wooden deck, surrounded by furniture.

While the outlet did not show the photo completely, the tattoos on Payne’s body confirmed it was him.

Several witnesses told TMZ that the incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. local time and the star had been acting erratically in the hotel lobby before his death. Reports say that he had to smash his laptop and be carried back to his room.

The pop star had arrived in the city with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, on September 30. The lovebirds also posted several happy photos of their vacation on social media. On October 2, the couple attended Payne’s former bandmate Nial Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires.

After Cassidy left the country on Monday, Lian checked into the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.

A look at Payne’s problematic past

Liam once revealed he was at his lowest during his time in 1D due to his alcohol and drug issues. The band formed in 2010 and broke up in 2015.

Payne explained on the Diary of a CEO podcast in June 2021, “I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. Where’s rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I’m very good at hiding it. No one would ever have seen it,”

When asked if he ever felt suicidal, Liam said, ”Yeah. There is some stuff that I have definitely never, never spoken about.”

He added, “It was really, really, really severe. It was a problem. And it was only until I saw myself after that I was like, ‘Right, I need to fix myself.’”

The singer also shared how his substance abuse took a toll on his mental health.

“There were a few pictures of me on a boat, and I was all bloated out,” he recalled. “I call it my pills-and-booze face. My face was just, like, 10 times more than it is now.”

He added, “I just didn’t like myself very much, and then I made a change.”

Celebs and fans react to his death

Paris Hilton spoke out about the devastating news on X, writing, “So upsetting to hear the news of @LiamPayne passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend.”

Singer Charlie Puth shared on his Insta Stories a series of pictures with Payne and a sad message. He wrote, ”I am in shock right now,”

”Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with.”
