Luke McFarlane and his career shaping

Luke McFarlane, 43 hails from the small town of London in Ontario, Canada. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School. He is a former singer and plays cello and trumpet well.

Luke has been working with Hallmark for a long time. In the last 8 years, he has starred in many of its TV series. Currently, he is in the channel’s gay rom-com Bros playing the love interest of Billy Eichner. Talking of it, Luke said:

“I came out in 2008 and I think that freaked out a lot of people that might offer me jobs,”
“Hallmark gave me jobs for a long time. And not only just the gay best friend — they let me be a leading man. I’m always going to be very grateful to them for that.”

He added:

“It’s funny the way careers have a trajectory of their own,”
“I came out almost 17 years ago and I never thought it would actually get me a job but it turned out that it did. I’m lucky that Billy was writing and being a comedian at this time in history.”

Why did Luke decide to come out?

Many celebrities prefer to not disclose their sexuality because they fear it will affect their career. Luke’s agent had also warned him against it. Luke recalled:

“When I mentioned [coming out] to my agent at the time, what I heard back was, ‘You know you don’t have to do that,’”
“And I was like, ‘Ah, wow. They don’t want me to do this.’ There were not a lot of people that had come out at that point. It was before Neil Patrick Harris. It was before Zachary Quinto and Matt Bomer.”

But Luke was adamant because he chose honesty over Hollywood:

“I think so many of the people I saw were tortured and ruined by the lies that they had to tell,”
“Hollywood is very important, work is very important but I think being honest is much more important.”

And in 2008, Luke came out as gay while giving an interview to a Canadian newspaper. At that time, he was with the show Brothers and Sisters.

Who is Luke’s current boyfriend?

Luke admitted that he was in the past on the gay dating app Grindr. This, he told the reporter of the Variety magazine. But he also said that it was all very scary. When asked about his current boyfriend, Luke declined to answer. He said:

“I’m not going to talk about that at all,”
“I give you my performance and you give me my privacy!”

Luke also feels that people prefer to watch Hallmark because of its romance factor:

“People watch Hallmark and Hallmark is successful because there is a lack of romance in our culture, there’s a lack of love, we’ve become a little bit cynical,”
“People watch Hallmark on repeat because they want to watch people fall in love and I think we’ve kind of forgotten that.”
