At Oklahoma, he played his true freshman year while redshirted. As a redshirt freshman, he participated in three games as a reserve offensive lineman. Entering his redshirt sophomore season, Hayes established himself as the Sooners’ starting left guard, starting each of Oklahoma’s 13 games.

He switched to right guard and made 11 starts for the Sooners in 2020, the season that was cut short by COVID-19. Returning to his position as left guard, he started each of Oklahoma’s 13 games. Hayes announced during the season that he would be joining the NFL Draft in 2022.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Marquis in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft (257th overall). On August 30, 2022, he was placed on injured reserve. Hayes was re-signed to the practice squad after being dismissed by the Cardinals on August 30, 2023.
