Who is Mary Berry?

Mary Berry was born in Somerset, England on 24 March 1935. She is of English ethnicity and has British nationality. As of 2024, she is 88 years old.

She is the daughter of Margaret (mother) and Alleyne William Steward Berry (father). Her birth name is Mary-Rosa Alleyne Berry.

Mary Berrys’s mother worked as a housewife and her father worked as a surveyor and planner who served as Mayor of Bath in 1952.

Sadly, her mother passed away at the age of 105 in 2011. She suffered from polio and spent three months in the hospital at the age of 13.

Mary Berry studied at Bath High School and attended Bath College of Domestic Science where she studied catering and institutional management. She has also joined Le Cordon Bleu School.

Mary Berry began her journey working at the Bath electricity board showroom conducting home visits to show new customers how to use their electric ovens.

She left the Dutch Dairy Bureau to become a recipe tester for PR firm Benson’s and has started writing her first book there.

She became a food editor of Housewife magazine in 1966. When she gave birth to her children she only took five weeks to leave as there was no set maternity leave.

Mary Berry became a food editor for Ideal Home magazine from 1970 and she worked there till 1973. In 2010, she became the judge on BBC One’s The Great British Bake Off.

Mary Berry became the first president of the new Bath Spa University Alumni Association in December 2012.

She has also worked as a host in her solo show Mary Berry Cooks which aired on 3 March 2014. She was voted 73rd in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2015.

Mary Berry is an author who has written more than seventy cookbooks. She published her first cookbook The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970 and since then she has been writing cookbooks.
