Merlin Griffiths is fighting it all!
The First Dates star Merlin Griffiths is raising awareness among people regarding many cancer facts. Meanwhile, he is also giving an update on his health, opening up about his ongoing battle with bowel cancer and his tumor surgery.
With the intention to encourage millions of other people like him to get checked out for the disease, he said, there is a 30% chance cancer could return in the next five years even after the surgical removal of the tumor.
“Just because you have an operation to remove the tumor doesn’t mean that all of a sudden you are cancer free. They used to call it remission, but now they call it NED, which means no evidence of disease.”
Don’t be assured after Tumor Surgery! It might be NED that can return within 5-10 years of surgery
Despite undergoing chemotherapy and successful operations to remove a 4.5cm stage three tumor earlier this year in 2022, Merlin Griffiths feels it is not done yet. The Channel 4 star said,
So NED happens after five years for bowel cancer. Now it’s a five-year ongoing process before they are willing to say alright, yeah, you’re about as safe as you can be.
The pub owner has further surgeries to take place in the coming days and he requested people to have regular check-ups for 10 years even after the tumor is removed.
“From there you’ll still have more regular check ups than most and then it’s ten years, you’re off the list from ten years. That’s as far as it goes. If there’s no recurrence of disease after ten years, then you are technically cured.”

Merlin Griffiths talked about his early-stage of Bowel cancer
Merlin Griffiths had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in the early stages. He also came up with the news of his ill health and cancer diagnosis in the summer of 2021.
He then revealed that his first visit to GP’s surgery was only booked after a long due as he was under 50. However, due to excruciating pain, his urgent treatment went much earlier than his scheduled follow-up.
His fellow First Dates colleagues including Fred Sirieix and Cici Coleman supported him in that time frame. Everyone from the set was so supportive and now Merlin is living with a stoma on his abdomen. More treatment based on the progress might come down the line.
