Nancy was on born Tuesday, July 1, 1958, in New York. When she was born her family lived in Brooklyn but soon moved to Far Rockaway, New York where she grew up with her older brother Clifford.

Her great-grandparents lost their lives in the Holocaust, and her paternal grandparents had concentration camp numbers on their wrists. Her mother took care of the children after separation and divorce.

Nancy Lieberman attended Far Rockaway High School in Queens, New York.  Lieberman joined Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and played on the women’s basketball team there from 1976 to 1980.

Her team won two consecutive AIAW National Championships (1979, 1980) and one Women’s National Invitation Tournament Championship(WNIT) in 1978. Lieberman got her degree from Old Dominion University in Interdisciplinary Studies on May 6, 1980.

Nancy Lieberman established herself as one of the top women’s basketball players in the country by earning one of only 12 slots on the USA’s National Team during her enrollment in high school. Lieberman won a slot on the 1980 Olympic team but withdrew from the squad.

Lieberman became a contestant on the season 4 Gold Medal Challenge of Champions special of American Gladiators. She failed to play after the third event with the lowest score of the three female competitors. She was selected as a player in 1996 to the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. Lieberman played for the Phoenix Mercury for the newly formed WNBA’s inaugural year in 1997. 

Nancy Lieberman got an opportunity to work as General Manager and Head Coach of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock in 1998 where she coached for three seasons. Lieberman worked as a women’s basketball analyst on ESPN after leaving the Shock. Lieberman signed a seven-day contract with the Detroit Shock, breaking her previous record as the oldest player in league history on July 24, 2008, at the age of 50.

On August 13, 2008, She became a member of the inaugural class which was going to be held in the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame. Nancy Lieberman became the coach of the Texas Legends in the NBA Development League and an affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. She also became the first woman to coach a professional men’s basketball team in November 2009.
