Early Life and Career Beginnings

Austin Richard Post was born in Syracuse, New York on July 4, 1995. His father and stepmother raised him, and the family moved to Grapevine, Texas, after his father was hired as the Dallas Cowboys’ concessions manager.

His father, who was a DJ in his youth, introduced him to various genres of music. The post began playing the guitar and was a member of a heavy metal band in Texas.

According to Post, he chose the stage name “Post Malone” when he was 14 or 15 years old by combining his last name with the word “Malone,” which he got from an online rap name generator.

He made his first mixtape, “Young and After Them Riches,” when Austin was 16 years old. He briefly enrolled in Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas, after graduating, but dropped out and moved to Los Angeles with friend Jason Probst.

Austin, Probst, and several other producers and artists in Los Angeles formed the band BLCKVRD and recorded music together, while several members also lived in the San Fernando Valley. Post met Rex Kudo, who produced several tracks for him, including “White Iverson,” while he was there.

Many people praised “White Iverson,” including Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa, and it received one million views within a month of its release. As a result, Post began attracting the attention of record labels, and in August 2015, he signed a recording contract with Republic Records.

Obtaining Success

He started working with well-known rappers like Kanye West, whom he met after being invited to perform at Kylie Jenner’s 18th birthday party. They worked together on Kanye West’s album “The Life of Pablo” single “Fade.”

Post’s first mixtape, “August 26,” was released in May 2016, followed by his debut studio album, “Stoney,” in December. In October 2017, the RIAA certified the album as double platinum. Post released the first single from his second album, “Rockstar,” featuring 21 Savage, in September 2017.

It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it remained for eight weeks. “Psycho,” the album’s second single, was released in February 2018 and featured Ty Dolla Sign, debuting at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Moreover, Post’s second studio album, “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” was released in April 2018 and set a Spotify first-day streaming record with 78.7 million streams worldwide.

Additionally, “Beerbongs & Bentleys” earned Post four Grammy nominations. “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” his third studio album, was released in September 2019 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

In August 2018, Post broke Michael Jackson’s 34-year-old record for most weeks on Billboard’s Top R&B and Hip-Hop Albums chart, with “Stoney” reaching its 77th week, compared to Jackson’s “Thriller” album, which only reached 76 weeks.

Further, other musical projects in which Post has participated include numerous collaborations with various artists. He collaborated with Swae Lee on the track “Sunflower” for the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” soundtrack in 2018. Another notable collaboration is the July 2019 track “Goodbyes,” which features Young Thug.

Post receives more royalties as his principal songwriter than many other recording artists. Post earns $500,000 per concert in concert revenue.

Austin also has sponsorships from companies like HyperX, True Religion, and Bud Light. His Bud Light collaboration has been particularly extensive; Post has not only performed at various Bud Light events such as their Bud Light: Dive Bar concerts, but they have also released a limited-edition fashion collection in August 2019.
