Why is Prince Charles and Camilla’s wedding anniversary a day of sorrow?

 Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall got married at Windsor Guildhall on 9 April 2005. It was the second marriage of both the Prince and the Duchess. Charles previously married Lady Diana. Camilla married her former beau Andrew Parker Bowles.

A wedding anniversary is always a happy occasion. But for Charles, The Prince of Wales, and Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, their 17th wedding anniversary will be a bittersweet memory.

As senior royals, the couple releases some beautiful portraits to mark their anniversary every year. But this year, it will no longer be the same joyous event for them.

On the same day, Prince Philip took his last breath at Windsor Castle. It left the whole world devastated and changed the shape of the monarchy.

The whole royal family recently paid a touching tribute to the late prince at a service of Thanksgiving.

Prince Charles’ and Camilla’s first marriages!

 Charles married Lady Diana Spencer on July 29, 1981. Their wedding was the biggest televised event of that era with total viewers of 750 million.

Together they had two children; Prince William and Prince Harry. Their marriage, however, could not stand the test of time. Their divorce took place in August 1996.

Camilla married her longtime boyfriend, Andrew Parker Bowles, on 4 July 1973. Andrew had previously dated Princess Anne, who is the younger sister of  Prince Charles. The couple has two children; Tom and Laura Parker Bowles.

The couple ended their marriage in 1995.

Why did Charles not marry Camilla in the first place?

 Charles always wanted to marry Camilla Shand. Charles 22, met Camilla, 24, and their 18-month friendship turned into a romantic relationship.  The couple dated for a long time before eventually marrying their first spouses.

Prince Charles‘ great uncle Lord Mountbatten advised him:

“Lovely for you two to have a fling, but this absolutely cannot end in marriage.”

The Royal Family never considered Camilla a suitable bride for the heir apparent. She was never aristocratic enough to fit in the role of a future queen.
