Who is Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh?
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh is the wife of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s youngest son Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh.
The duo first met in 1987.
After many years of relationship, Sophie, who was a commoner by birth married the prince in 1999. Upon their marriage, the newlyweds received the titles, Earl and Countess of Wessex, later becoming full-time working members of the British Royal family.
Sophie, the least controversial female member of the world’s most famous family has dedicated her life to charity causes alongside her husband, on behalf of the late Queen and now King Charles III.
Despite being a senior member of the family, Sophie made it very clear that she and Edward’s two kids, Louise and James will have their own way into the world.
She once said,
“We try to bring them up with the understanding that they are very likely to have to work for a living,”

Sophie’s background, career, marriage, and relationship with the Queen
Sophie was born Helen Rhys-Jones on January 20, 1965, in Oxford to Mary and Christopher Bournes Rhys-Jones.
Her mom was a charity worker and her dad was a sales director.
She studied at Dulwich Preparatory School and Kent College and later completed her security training at West Kent College.
After completing her education, Sophie started working in public relations. She met her future husband in 1987 while working at Capital Radio. He was dating Sophie’s friend at the time.
The two met again in 1993 when she got a chance to pose as a model with the royal on a tennis court.
A friend recalled,
“Nobody knew that there was an attraction between them that day,
“But Edward always had an eye for a bright girl — and Sophie is bright, sparky and fun.“
Edward popped the question to Sophie while on a vacation in the Bahamas in December 1998.
They married on June 19, 1999, at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
They welcomed their first child, Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor on November 8, 2003. Louise was a premature child and her dad was not present at the time of her arrival get was on an official visit to Mauritius.
The countess gave birth to their second child, James Alexander Philip Theor Mountbatten-Windsor on December 17, 2007.
The late Queen admired Sophie’s love for charity work and her duty toward the royal family. A source said while the Queen was alive,
“They are very close. Sophie is very family orientated, and the Queen appreciates that.”
