Sarah Burton says goodbye to Alexander McQueen
Sarah Burton, Alexander McQueen’s creative director who designed Princess Catherine‘s famous Royal wedding gown is leaving the British fashion house after her final Paris Fashion Week show later this month, the brand announced on Monday.
Burton, 49, worked with the designer himself for more than a decade before he died in February 2010. Then, that spring, she was appointed director of the label. It was less than a year before she designed the princess’s iconic wedding gown, which is today one of the most famous wedding dresses of all time.
Along with the stunning long-sleeved lace gown that the princess wore for her wedding to Prince William in April 2011, she has worn many McQueen designs over the years. The label has become one of the Princess of Wales’ number-one choices for formal and casual events.
Some of the most beautiful dresses Catherine has worn from the fashion houses were the one-shouldered white BAFTAs gown that she sported earlier this year, a green Christmas coat, or even the lilac dress she wore twice.
Catherine is also an avid fan of McQueen’s perfectly cut blazers which she owns in a variety of colors like black, red, pink, and white which she most recently wore to Rugby’s World Cup on Saturday.
After the label’s announcement, Sarah herself shared her gratitude to the “incredible team at Alexander McQueen” in a statement. There she wrote that the house has been her home for the past 26 years.
She paid a homage to McQueen himself, writing,
“He taught me so much and I am eternally grateful to him.”
“I am looking forward to the future and my next chapter and will always carry this treasured time with me,”

”Kate’s wedding dress was DIVINE.”

”Catherine’s wedding dress was class apart. Thank you Sarah.”
Burton now becomes the second royal gown designer to cut ties with their fashion house in recent times. Meghan Markle’s wedding dress designer, Claire Waight Keller also left Givenchy in 2020, just after three years with the French fashion house.
While we do not know what Burton is planning next, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the princess followed the iconic designer’s next move.
