Meet Bhutan’s new princess Sonam Yangden Wangchuck!
Queen Jetsun Pema and King Jigme Khesar of Bhutan announced the name of their 3-month-old daughter on their official social media account.
The royals announced the arrival of their baby girl on September 9. They also shared the name of the princess with the world after a traditional Buddhist ceremony on Saturday.
Sharing an adorable snap of their baby girl snuggled up in a floral blanket, Jetsun, 33, and Jigme, 43, revealed the name and the meaning behind it. They wrote,
“Her Royal Highness the Gyalsem has been named Sonam Yangden Wangchuck,”
“Sonam is a Bhutanese name denoting merit, longevity and good fortune. The name Yangden, meaning precious jewel, signifies prosperity and wellbeing,”
The last name Wangchuck is the family’s dynastic name. In Bhutan, only royal family members have traditional surnames.
The doting mom and dad of the princess also share special photos from the naming ceremony. Sonam is the third child of the royal couple who are already parents to princes Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel, 7, and Jigme Ugyen Wangchuck, 3. The big brothers looked lovingly at their baby sister during the ceremony.
Like their sibling, the brothers’ names were not revealed until the naming ceremony which took place a few months after they were born.
As for the location, Sonam’s naming ceremony took place at the Tashichhodzong monastery on a special date — the 17th anniversary of her father’s accession to the Golden Throne.
The ceremony had many attendees from the Bhutanese royal family.
One photo showed the King holding his daughter and the other showed the two young brothers sharing a hug.
Jigme became the new monarch after his father King Jigme Singye abducted the throne in 2006.
Now known as the Fourth Druk Gyalpo attended his granddaughter’s naming ceremony along with the Queen Mothers.

How did Jetsun and Jigme announce the arrival of their baby girl?
If Jetsun and Jigme ever have another son, Sonam could be displaced in the line of succession as Bhutan’s constitution rules that princes precede princesses.
It was in June that the royal couple announced they were having a baby girl.
Their Instagram post read,
”Their Majesties, The Druk Gyalpo and Gyaltsuen are happy to share the news that Her Majesty is expecting their third child, due in early autumn,”
“Their majesties wish to thank everyone for their continued good wishes and prayers.”
After the princess’s birth, the couple then announced the news but kept her name a secret.
The social media message read,
“We are honoured to share the wonderful news that a healthy baby girl has been born to Their Majesties, The Druk Gyalpo and Gyaltsuen today, coinciding with the 25th day of the 7th month of the Female Water Rabbit Year, in Lingkana Palace, Thimphu,”
It continued,
“Both Her Majesty and the Royal baby are doing well,”
“Their Majesties extend their heartfelt gratitude to the medical team of dedicated doctors and nurses, the Zhung Dratshang for all the prayers conducted and to everyone for their well wishes.”
