Regina King talks about how her son Ian Alexander Jr.‘s death has reshaped her life.

In the latest interview with Robin Roberts for Good Morning America, the Oscar-winner, 53, reflects on how life changed after losing her son in January 2022.

During the sit-down interview, she shared how “grief is a journey,” and that her upcoming film, Shirley, is dedicated to her late son.

The preview clip shows the interviewer asking the star, 63, “What have these last two years been like for you?”

Ian died by suicide two years ago just after he turned 26. He was Regina’s only child whom she shared with her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander Sr.

King responded,

“Oh wow. I’m a different person now than I was Jan. 19,”

“I am.”

She also shared insight about her painful relationship with grief these past couple of years.

The Watchmen actress explained,

“Grief is a journey,” 

 “I understand that.”

She continued,

“Grief is love that has no place to go,” 

“And that we all handle it differently.”

How did Regan remember her son after his death?

One year ago, King shared a message on Instagram to pay respects to Ian for his late birthday and mark his first death anniversary.

The grieving mother wrote at the time,

“January 19th is Ian’s Worthday. As we still process his physical absence, we celebrate his presence,” 

“We are all in different places on the planet…so is Ian. His spirit is the thread that connects us.”

Regina continued,

“Of course orange is your favorite color…Its the fire and the calm. I see you in everything I breath. My absolute favorite thing about myself is being ….Regina the mother of Ian the GodKing.”

“Continue to shine bright, my guiding light,”

While announcing her son’s passing two years ago, she released a statement, saying,

“Our family is devastated at the deepest level by the loss of Ian. He is such a bright light who cared so deeply about the happiness of others. Our family asks for respectful consideration during this private time. Thank you.”

Fans extended their support in the comment section, with one writing,

”Love Regina King. Wishing her Best memories and Healing. Her Love for ️ Ian will always be true.”

Another commented,
