He has worked in several television series. He started his television career by playing small roles such as Prince Jobah in The New Adventures of Ocean Girl; and as Sally Fletcher’s first boyfriend, Gus Bishop, in Home and Away.

Later, in 2001, he got the breakthrough after playing the role of scruffy womanizing writer Evan Wylde in the Australian television drama series The Secret Life of Us. He also won the  AFI Award in 2001 for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Television Drama Series. Likewise, he played the role of Toby Kirby in the TV miniseries After the Deluge which was directed by Brendan Maher.

From 2008 to 11, he portrayed the role of Leon Broznic in the television police drama Rush alongside other stars Rodger Corser, Callan, Mulvey, Claire van der Boom, Josef Ber, and Nicole da Silva. He also made his appearance in Wilfred as Sam, The Wizards of Aus aa Terry, Molly as Molly Meldrum, and Eden as Ezra Katz.

Samuel Johnson has also worked in several movies. He made his movie debut in 1995 by playing the role of Check-Out Cashier in Angel Baby. In 2002, he appeared in the comedy film Crackerjack as Dave Jackson. His other movie includes Ten Feet Tall, Dead Rain, and The House of Names.
