Sandra Denton first worked as a customer service representative at Sears. There, she met Cheryl James. Together, the duo released a single titled, ‘The Showstopper’. The track became a hit in late 1985 and they started gaining some attention.

In 1986, Deidra Roper joined the group as the DJ and the trio released their debut album, ‘Hot, Cool & Vicious’. The album sold more than a million copies worldwide.

The rap group further released four studio albums, A Salt with a Deadly Pepa (1988), Blacks’ Magic (1990), Very Necessary (1993), and Brand New (1997).

Their fourth album, ‘Very Necessary’ was a massive hit and sold more than 7 million copies worldwide making it the highest-selling album by a female rap group in history. So far, the group has sold over 15 million records worldwide.

The group has received several Grammy Award nominations. They won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 1995 for their song, ‘None of Your Business’. The group is one of the most influential female rap groups in history and has received the title of ‘The First Ladies of Rap and Hip Hop’.

Acting Career

In 1992, Denton started her acting career by featuring in ‘Stay Tuned’. Following that, she made appearances in Joe’s Apartment, First Time Felon, etc. She then had a memorable role as Officer Andrea Phelan on the TV drama, Oz.

Denton teamed up with Cheryl James for VH1’s reality TV show, The Salt-N-Pepa Show. After that, she starred in her own reality show, Let’s Talk About Pep. In 2011, she appeared in the sitcom, Are We There Yet?’ in which she portrayed Tammy. She joined the cast of the TV show, Growing Up Hip Hop in 2016.
