Sion Sono, 60, a famous Japanese director is accused of sexual assault by multiple women. The director is yet to speak in his defense.

Is Sion Sono guilty or innocent?

Sion Sono is in controversy lately because of the accusations made by two women citing he offered them parts in his films in return for sex.

The allegations were made against him in April, in women’s magazine Shukan Josei. However, the director has not said anything on this matter.

An executive at Japanese Film Distribution supports the voice of the women accusing the director.

He said:

“Even now, there is a director who has no qualms about saying ‘If you screw me, I’ll give you work’. His films are acclaimed and many actresses want to appear in them. He uses that to assault women as if it’s nothing. That director is Sion Sono.”

Another director, Hideko Sakaki was also accused of the same case, last month. Japan may see its own #metoomovement.

One actress recalls an incident where Sono asked her to have sex with him for a role in his film. When the actress refused, he called a female that had previously worked with him and both started having sex in front of the actress.

Sion Sono’s Film Career

Sion Sono is one of the most celebrated directors in Japan. Besides, he is also a poet and author.

Sono ran away from home when he was 17 and join a cult. This hugely inspired his film Love Exposure which he directed in 2008. He started his career as a poet before getting into the direction.

His notable works include Suicide Club, Why Don’t You Play in Hell?, The Forest of Love and Guilty of Romance.

His movies are mostly international successes and have won several awards and accolades globally.

Sion Sono was born on 18 December 1961 in Toyokawa, Japan. He is a Sagittarius. Sono started working on a series of short films on Super 8 as a student before becoming a director.

The director married Megumi Kagurazaka, an actress and glamour model in 2011. She has starred in some of his films.
