The police believe that it was more likely to be a genuine distress signal left by a man and woman who became stranded there back in 2013. They have stated they were contacted by the brother of the man, who came to know of it from the BBC.

The man, named John, said his brother and a female companion were on-board a yacht and were said to have been stranded at Swift Bay, around 500 km (300 miles) from the city of Broome back in 2013.

The pair had tried to return to civilization on a raft which “was attacked by a couple of crocodiles” at some point. But, it is assumed that the pair made it to the coast safely and built the SOS signal.

Solving the Mystery

The SOS signal mystery was finally solved when the police were contacted by the brother of the man, who read about the case on the BBC.

“The brother actually saw an article on the BBC,”

Senior Sgt. Dave Rudd of Western Australia Police told of the man.

Senior Sgt. Rudd said that the pair had survived on their rations, had found some fresh water, and eventually were rescued by another passing yacht.

Police said they have not been able to speak directly with Robert because he was on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea. But they said that they had seen the photographs showing the distress signal taken at the time the pair got themselves into trouble.

“We can see from the photo that it’s the same location and the same SOS,”

Senior Sgt Rudd said.

“We’re very confident it’s legitimate and it’s the real deal but until we speak with him there’s still a few unanswered questions.”
