Stephan James is a Canadian actor. After appearing in a number of television shows as a teenager, he catapulted to notoriety when he won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor for his performance as track and field sprinter Jesse Owens in the 2016 film Race.

In 2018, he starred in Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed drama film If Beale Street Could Talk, which is based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award that year for his role as Walter Cruz in the Amazon series Homecoming.

James began his television career with a two-season recurring role on the long-running Canadian adolescent series Degrassi. After leaving Degrassi, James appeared in several minor parts on television, including How To Be Indie, Clue, and My Babysitter’s a Vampire in 2011, and The Listener and The LA Complex in 2012. In 2011, he also appeared as a supporting character in the ABC Family television film 12 Dates of Christmas.

Later career James received his first significant feature film role opposite Tatyana Ali and Fefe Dobson in the Canadian film Home Again (2012), playing a Jamaican deportee.

The film garnered mixed reviews, The Globe and Mail praised James’ performance, calling it “heartbreaking.”James was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the first Canadian Screen Awards for his performance,[10], but he lost to Serge Kanyinda.

In 2013, James was cast as civil rights pioneer John Lewis in Ava Duvernay’s Martin Luther King Jr. film Selma (2014), which received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.  When asked about the Academy’s planned “snubs” for the film,

James said:

Even before I watched the finished version, I considered this film to be a victory. No accolade can compare to how I feel about what we’ve accomplished with this picture. We’ve done something very relevant for our youth.

James appeared as a guest in the CBC television miniseries The Book of Negroes, which was based on Lawrence Hill’s award-winning novel of the same title.

He played African American track and field sprinter Jesse Owens in the biopic Race (2016), with Jason Sudeikis, replacing Star Wars’ John Boyega.  James earned the Best Actor award at the Canadian Screen Awards for his performance in Race.

In 2017’s FOX limited series Shots Fired, James portrays DOJ prosecutor Preston Terry.  In 2018, he starred in Barry Jenkins’ film version of James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk, which received multiple Academy Award nominations.

He also appeared in the Amazon series Homecoming that year, playing Walter Cruz with Julia Roberts, Bobby Cannavale, and Shea Whigham. James received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Homecoming. Recently, he and Shamier Anderson inked a contract with Boat Rocker.

In 2016, James and his brother, actor Shamier Anderson, created the non-profit B.L.A.C.K. Canada (Building a Legacy in Acting, Cinema, and Knowledge). James remarked, “We don’t lack talent, but we lack opportunities.

The objective of the group is to create a coalition of supporters who can give financing, mentorship, programming, and prizes to foster Black excellence in Canada.
