Steve Kerr’s take on the visit to the White House

NBA Champions, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr on 21st June 2017 said that he would request his team members to accept the White House invite if and when they get it.

Steve Kerr told ‘The TK Show’ podcast:

“I would want to make sure the players gave this really a lot of thought. And everybody knows I’ve been a very outspoken critic of [President Donald] Trump, and as a result, maybe we won’t even get the invitation. But I do think it’s very important to consider a potential invitation because I think it could have really positive ramifications if we did go.”

He had told ESPN’s The Lowe Post podcast a few days back that he respects the Office, the Institution, and the government irrespective of people’s opinions about the person sitting on that chair.

He repeated the same on ‘The TK Show’ podcast and added that at a time when there is so much anger and division around, we must put all the hatred and personal issues aside and respect the institution.

Steve Kerr feels that it might be a good opportunity to meet the President and voice out our concerns. He wants the players to ponder on this option rather than just saying that they do not want to go.

Steve Kerr said that he also has been hurt by some of Trump’s words and actions but he believes that a visit to the White House might assist to connect people in a divided nation.

He continued:

“We all have to start thinking about ways we can connect with one another and stop this divide, and maybe sports is a good sort of forum to try to help that,”

Steve Kerr said that he would love to get an invitation from the White House. Steve Kerr further said:

“This is not about partisan policy, it’s not about Democrat or Republican, it’s about communication, it’s about respect, it’s about character and morality. And those are things that we have to really value as a country.”

Warriors’ refusal

It might be recalled that several Warriors including their Captain Stephen Curry have publicly made it clear that they would not want to attend any White House invitation.

They said that they would decline it, though they know that there has been no formal decision made on it yet in their team. They also agree that the decision would only come after they get an invitation.

The Warriors team had received an invitation from California’s East Bay Congressional representatives which they had willingly accepted.

Steve Kerr’s conflicted mind state

It has been said that Steve Kerr November 2016 had said that he would not go to the White House if invited but he did not want the state to be made public at that time.

Last month, in an interview given to ‘Sports Illustrated’, he heavily criticized Donald Trump. Drawing a comparison between the previous coach Bobby Knight who was a bully and Donald Trump, Steve Kerr said this about Donald Trump:

“Frankly, I think it’s why Trump couldn’t be more ill-suited to be president, because he’s a blowhard. You don’t see some of the qualities you talk about, the resilience, the ability to communicate, the compassion. None of that. But in the old days, a lot of great coaches who maybe didn’t have those, there was still a fiber there, whatever it was. To be a great leader, there have to be some qualities in there.

“Has anyone ever thought that Donald Trump was a great leader?”

But now after the win, Steve Kerr was singing a different tune. He wanted his team to reconsider going to the White House.

The White House may not invite Steve Kerr and his team amidst the controversy and criticism. Stating this point, Steve Kerr had said to ‘The TK Show’ podcast:

“This might not even be a point because of how vocal we’ve all been in our opposition to Trump’s actions and some of his words. So we may not get the invitation. But it’s something I absolutely would entertain.”

When asked about giving Trump a Warriors jersey, Steve Kerr’s confusion became more apparent. He paused and said that the team would need to discuss the goodness of going to the White House if invited.
