SZA recalls her young romance with Drake

SZA is openly talking about her 2009 fling with Drake.

The SOS hitmaker recalled her short-lived fling with the rapper during a conversation with Rolling Stone for her cover story published on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old told the mag,

“We were really young,”

“It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish.”

It was shortly after SZA graduated high school that the two started dating when they were both spending time in New York City.

Despite hiding their past romance for over a decade, Drake, now 36, expressed it in the 2020 hit song, Mr. Right Now.

He rapped on the track,

“Yeah, said she wanna f—k to some SZA, wait / ‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08,”

After Drake spilled the beans, SZA set the record straight about their romance on Twitter.

In October 2020, she tweeted,

“So it was actually 2009 lol,”

“In this case a year of poetic rap license mattered lol I think he just innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm … it’s all love all peace.”

The songstress who was just 18 at the time and Drake was 21, noted that she wanted to make it clear that she was not underage at the time.

She wrote,

“Completely innocent,”

“Lifetimes ago.”

SZA and Drake released new music this year

Despite her romance with the Hotline Bling rapper, the Kill Bill singer loves keeping most of her private life out of the public eye.

Drake, too, said that he wished he had kept his past romance out of his music, earlier this year.

During a conversation with Lil Yachty on Moody Conversations in March, the Canadian artist said that he regrets dropping the names of his exes in his songs and disrupting their lives.

He recalled a chat with an ex-girlfriend,

“I had somebody tell me one time, ‘You know, it’s not necessarily what you’re saying about me, it’s the fact that you said it,’”

“‘You don’t know who my boyfriend is at the time, or you don’t know what my family knows or doesn’t know. And if you express any form of discontent for me and call me by name in a song, then all of a sudden I’m left to pick up the pieces of my own life that I’ve tried to build up for myself.’”

While we don’t know which ex was Drake talking about, he definitely seems to be on good terms with SZA.

Just last month, the exes released their first collab, Slime You Out which quickly topped the charts.

In the interview, SZA also revealed that she dated one man on and off for eleven years. They even got engaged at a point and recently ended their relationship.
